As you approach, a wise old man smiles and greets you, "Welcome, young one. I am who they call the Sage of the Creator. It has been a while since I have had company. Shall I share with you a story?" Beckoning, he continues, "Come come, don't be shy. My story is about the beginnings of the gods, humans, demons and dragons themselves!"
"When Pan Gu, the creator, was young, there was nothing in the universe. He created the sun, moon, and stars in Heaven; and the mountains, seas, and animals on Earth."
"Nuwa came to be with his divine grace. With the body of a snake and a human head, she moulded figures from the yellow earth and gave them life, creating the human race."
"With each passing however, the restless souls of the humans had no where to go in the underworld, and thus they became demons, at war with their former brethen. They struck the pillars which held the heavens up, and they started to crack, placing the human world in danger."
"To save the lives she had created, Nuwa melted down five-coloured stones to mend the breach. And when it was done, exhausted by her toil, she lay down upon the earth and became a mountain range, nurturing the divine land, China."
"Not all was well however, for there were none to lead the realms. Chaos was everywhere, in heaven, earth and hell. Some places had floods, others had droughts."
"But in the centre of this chaos, a city prospered, under the leadership of a patient and forgiving man. Governing wisely, he drew the attention of the gods, who brought him to heaven. Eventually, he rose in the ranks of deityhood to become the Jade Emperor, the Supreme God of the Three Worlds."
Law and Order
"Among the Jade Emperor's most significant acts in the early part of his rule were pacts with the human, demon and dragon races."
"With the Yellow Emperor, by governing the sun, the clouds, the rain and the wind, fair weather allowed the land and the humans to prosper."
"With the Yama Kings, the passing of each human allowed for their souls to go through the cycle of birth, death, judgement and reincarnation."
"With the Dragon Kings, the sea which is their home will always be kept pure and sacred."
"With these in place, the gods, humans, demons and dragons lived in peaceful co-existence."
The War of the Gods
"That peace was short-lived however, because of a civil war between the Gods."
"Hong Gong led the rebellious faction, because he was discontented with the Jade Emperor's leadership, and sought to seize power from him."
"Their struggle was so great, it tore the heavens asunder. The earth cracked, the mountains shattered, and the sky went dark. The end of everything was at hand."
"But it was not to be, for the dragons joined forces with the Jade Emperor, and he cast Hong Gong and his followers into the pits of hell, imprisoning them in its depths forever."
Yawning briefly, he concluded, "I hope you liked the story. I think I will take a rest. Move along now." Nodding off, he then fell asleep.
Suddenly, the ground shook, almost like there was an earthquake. The sleeping old man fell off his chair, rudely awakened by the tremors. Eventually, the tremors subsided.......
"My, it has been a while since that happened," the old man muttered to himself. "Better go inside, better go inside." He walked into a cave mouth and then looked back at you when he was at its entrance. "Well don't just stand there, follow me!"
Walking through a corridor lighted with torches which do not seem to give off heat, it widens into a circular chamber with words all around it, on its walls and even on its floors. Set in the middle was a bronze censer.
Going to the censer, he moved his right hand above it and with a downward motion, he placed some joss sticks that just appeared in his hand. Flicking his index and middle finger, flames flew from his finger tips, lighting up the tips of the joss sticks. After a while, he did a backhanded wave of his right hand, dousing the flames of the still-lighted joss sticks.
Closing his eyes, he placed his palms together and prayed. After a while, the chamber disappeared, only to be replaced with the sun and the stars all around. Some glowed, some shone, and the rest were subdued.
"Hmmm..." mused the old man as he looked at the stars. "This doesn't look good, don't you think?" he said to you, after a while.
"Oh, you can't read the stars? Let me show them to you then. You see those stars?" He points at a constellation. "That is the constellation of the Monkey, one of the twelve zodiac animals. It is now shining very brightly."
"Then there is the dragon, phoenix, tiger and tortoise constellations, the guardians of celestial heaven. They look subdued."
"And look over there, the great north star. It normally shines brightly and guide the way of seafarers, but it appears dimmed."
"The dark red star below, it is glowing off and on. That is the star of misfortune. That one is blinking off and on."
Looking at you, he speaks seriously, "If the constellation of the Monkey shines brightest of all, it means mischief is taking place. There is a distruption in the realms of heaven, far greater than what it has ever seen before, surpassing even the guardians of heaven."
"The realm of the sea has been distrupted as well, for the dragons rule the seas."
"And finally, the realm of hell, a glowing star can only mean that certain forces are at work there."
"The universe is all about the balance of things, yet its existence is in danger. There is no good without evil. No heaven without hell. Nor earth without sea. All has to be in harmony."
"The forces are aligned, the future to be seen. What is your destiny? Will you be part of it?"
